Buffer Tanks

Buffer tanks are used to maximize the use of stored energy for cooling or heating. When operating with a boiler, excess heat may be produced, which can be put to use. This ensures economical boiler operation. Buffer tanks are used together with solid fuel boilers or heat pumps, so you can use the accumulated heat and extend fuel cycle times.

Longer operating cycles benefit both the heat pump and the customer:

The heat pump does not need to switch on and off as often, thereby helping preserve the heat pump compressor;
Frequent on/off cycles consume significantly more energy compared with a system fitted with a suitably sized buffer tank;
If an air-to-water heat pump has been purchased, a buffer tank is absolutely essential. When the air-to-water heat pump enters a defrost cycle, it is necessary to draw thermal energy from the heating water to defrost the evaporator. In this case, an accumulation tank is needed to ensure the required defrosting capacity without excessively cooling the home heating system.
Optimally sized buffer tanks are about 20 liters per kilowatt.
